What actually drives steel fabrication cost in the UAE

Four things move a quote more than anything else: total tonnage, connection complexity, finish specification and site access.

Tonnage sets the base. A 15 ton frame spreads setup, drawings and machine time across more kilograms, so your rate per kg drops. A 700 kg canopy or a single staircase carries the same setup cost on far fewer kilograms. That is why small jobs often quote at AED 4.50 to AED 6.50 per kg on the fabrication line, while larger frames land nearer AED 3.00 per kg.

Complexity is the second lever. Plain beams with simple connections are quick to cut, drill and weld. Moment connections, gusset plates, base plates, curved members and tight tolerances add hours per piece. Anything needing lathe work is quoted separately, usually AED 80 to AED 400 per component depending on diameter and tolerance.

Finish is the third. Mill finish is cheapest. Shop primer is typically AED 0.50 to AED 0.90 per kg. Hot dip galvanising adds around AED 1,400 to AED 1,900 per ton and depends on the galvaniser's schedule. Intumescent fire protection is priced by the applicator and the fire rating, so it rarely belongs inside a fabrication rate.

Site access is the fourth. A frame going into a yard in Sharjah Industrial Area with a clear laydown area costs less to install than the same frame going into a busy Dubai development with a two hour lifting window and night work permits.

Material is only part of the story. On a typical 2026 structural package, raw steel is about 45 to 55 percent of the finished price. 2026 fabrication rates: AED per kg and per ton

For 2026, expect these shop rates. They cover cutting, drilling, fitting, welding and inspection of the fabricated item, and exclude material unless stated.

Fabrication rates per kg, 2026

  • Simple structural frames, columns and beams: AED 2.60 to AED 3.40 per kg
  • Medium complexity with base plates, gussets and stiffeners: AED 3.20 to AED 4.20 per kg
  • Stainless steel fabrication, grade and finish dependent: AED 6.00 to AED 11.00 per kg
  • GI and light gauge welding: AED 3.50 to AED 5.50 per kg
  • Lathe and machined items: AED 80 to AED 400 per piece

Add material at AED 2,600 to AED 3,200 per ton for standard S275 and S355 sections. That is why the all in figure for a fabricated, primed and delivered frame usually lands between AED 5,500 and AED 8,500 per ton.

Worked example: 12 ton mezzanine frame in Dubai

A client in Al Quoz needs a 12 ton mezzanine steel frame, supplied, fabricated, primed, delivered and erected by our own crew. Here is how the AED figure builds up.

  • Structural sections, 12 t at AED 2,850 per ton: AED 34,200
  • Fabrication, 12,000 kg at AED 3.20 per kg: AED 38,400
  • Surface prep and shop primer, 12,000 kg at AED 0.60 per kg: AED 7,200
  • Transport and offloading to site: AED 2,400
  • Erection by our crew, 12 t at AED 750 per ton: AED 9,000

Total: AED 91,200, or AED 7,600 per ton, which is AED 7.60 per kg. Take erection out and the supply, fabricate and deliver package is AED 82,200, or AED 6,850 per ton.

Exclusions in that number: DET and municipality approval fees, civil and foundation works, fireproofing, hot dip galvanising, crane hire above the standard offloading allowance, anchor bolts and 5 percent VAT.

Material vs fabrication vs erection vs approval: what is and is not in the price

A quotation is only comparable once you know which buckets it covers. Most pricing disputes in the UAE come from a low looking rate that simply left two or three of these out.

  • Material: steel sections, plates, bolts and consumables, priced per ton with mill certificates
  • Fabrication: shop drawings, cutting, drilling, fitting, welding, dimensional check and shop primer if specified
  • Surface protection: primer, hot dip galvanising, powder coating or intumescent paint, often a separate supplier
  • Transport: delivery to site, offloading, and any tail lift or crane allowance
  • Erection: cranes, rigging, bolting, alignment and touch up paint on site
  • Approvals and testing: DET submissions in Dubai, third party welding inspection, NDT, load testing and fire rating sign off

How cost moves by emirate

Base fabrication rates are national, but logistics, access and documentation push the delivered price up or down by roughly 5 to 15 percent depending on where the job sits.

Dubai: tight sites, tower works, night permits and strict DET submission timelines. Rates are the highest in the country and the site logistics line on a quote is rarely small. We go deeper on that in our post on steel fabrication in Dubai.

Abu Dhabi: similar base fabrication rate, but industrial and government projects often add third party inspection, welder qualification records and client approved ITP documentation. Expect the fabrication rate per ton in Abu Dhabi to run 5 to 10 percent above a plain commercial job in the same weight class, almost all of it documentation and inspection time.

Sharjah: workshop rents and yard space are lower, so fabrication rates often come in 5 to 8 percent below Dubai. The saving holds when the workshop is close to site and transport is a short run.

Northern emirates: Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah suit larger, simpler frames where a workshop can cut and assemble without city access restrictions. Transport distance is the main variable, so ask for delivery as a separate line instead of a lump sum.

How to compare two steel fabrication quotations like-for-like

Two quotes for the same frame can differ by 30 percent and still describe the same work. Follow these steps and the gap usually explains itself.

  1. Check the tonnage. Confirm both quotes use the same take off and the same section sizes. A 10 percent tonnage difference is the most common reason two totals do not match.
  2. Split material from fabrication. Ask each fabricator to show material per ton and fabrication per kg as separate figures.
  3. List the finish. Primer, galvanising, intumescent paint and powder coating are different scopes with different suppliers.
  4. Confirm transport and offloading. Ask who pays for the crane, the hiab and any waiting time at the gate.
  5. Check whether erection is included, and at what rate per ton.
  6. Ask what is excluded and put it in writing. Approvals, NDT, anchor bolts and VAT should all be visible on the page.
