Steel fabrication Dubai: 2026 guide for contractors

Steel fabrication in Dubai means cutting, welding, drilling and finishing mild steel, stainless steel and GI sections into structural frames, mezzanine floors, platforms and staircases, then delivering and erecting them on site. For an industrial package in 2026, budget about AED 4,800 to 6,200 per tonne for steel that is fabricated and erected, or AED 2,600 to 3,400 per tonne if you only need workshop fabrication.

What commercial steel fabrication in Dubai covers

Scope on a Dubai industrial job usually breaks into a few clear packages. Structural steel for warehouses and factories, pre engineered building frames, mezzanine floors with load calculations, access platforms, staircases and handrails, plus the secondary steel that carries ducts, pipes and cable trays.

  • Structural columns, beams and bracing to BS EN 1090 or AISC details
  • PEB frames, purlins and secondary members for warehouses and sheds
  • Mezzanine floors with decking, edge protection and access stairs
  • Plant platforms, ladders, cages and guardrails in mild steel or galvanised finish
  • Stainless steel and GI fabrication for food, beverage and pharma fit outs
  • Lathe work for shafts, bushes, flanges and replacement machine parts

Clients are mostly main contractors, EPC teams and facility managers working across Dubai. A JAFZA fit out often needs grade 316 stainless because of washdown chemicals, while a Dubai South warehouse usually calls for hot dip galvanised mild steel with a painted topcoat.

Workshop fabrication or site work in Dubai

About 80 to 90 percent of the work belongs in the workshop and the rest on site. Shop fabrication gives better weld access, tighter dimensional control and a lower cost per tonne, so it is the default for anything that fits on a trailer. Site fabrication only makes sense for oversized members, plant shutdown windows, or connections that must be measured against existing steel.

A typical Dubai job runs like this:

  1. Shop drawings and a weld map are approved by the contractor and the consultant.
  2. Material is cut, drilled and trial fitted in the workshop, with mill certificates logged against each heat number.
  3. Welding is completed and joints are checked visually and by NDT where the inspection plan calls for it.
  4. Surface preparation and painting are finished, or members are dispatched to a galvaniser.
  5. Delivery is scheduled around RTA permits for over dimensional loads and plot access windows.
  6. Erection runs with a mobile crane, connections are torqued or welded, then final inspection and handover.

Logistics decide the programme more often than the welding does. Moving 12 m beams from Al Quoz to JAFZA needs a low bed trailer, an RTA permit and a night window, and a crane standing on a finished slab in Dubai Investments Park needs matting and a load check before the first lift.

Steel fabrication Dubai cost in 2026

Cost is driven by tonnage, section size, connection complexity, finish, access and the level of inspection. Section prices move with mill offers, so most fabricators hold a quotation for 14 to 30 days.

Worked example: fabricated and erected steel for a Dubai South warehouse extension

Take a 42 tonne frame for a warehouse extension, 24 m clear span, 8 m to eaves, bolted connections, galvanised columns with painted beams, erected in an existing yard with a 50 tonne mobile crane. At AED 4,800 to 6,200 per tonne, the package lands between AED 201,600 and AED 260,400. The spread comes from finish and inspection level, not from the steel weight. If the extension carries a storage floor, add mezzanine decking at AED 320 to 520 per sq m.

Fabrication only and erection only rates

Package2026 rate
Mild steel shop fabrication onlyAED 2,600 to 3,400 per tonne
Structural steel fabrication with galvanisingAED 3,400 to 4,300 per tonne
Site erection only, labour and plantAED 900 to 1,400 per tonne
Stainless steel handrail, supply and installAED 480 to 750 per linear metre
Mezzanine decking, supply and installAED 320 to 520 per sq m

Dubai approvals, welding documents and coastal protection

Every steel package in Dubai needs a permit trail and a weld document pack before steel goes up. Permits come from the authority that controls the plot: Dubai Municipality for most industrial land, Dubai Development Authority for the communities it governs, and the free zone authority for JAFZA or Dubai Investments Park plots. Submissions normally include stamped shop drawings, a design check from a licensed engineer and Dubai Civil Defence clearance where the steel forms part of the structure or an escape route.

The welding pack should carry WPS and PQR to ISO 15614, welder qualification to ISO 9606, mill certificates to EN 10204 3.1, consumable certificates, NDT reports for the joints named in the inspection plan, plus galvanising certificates to ISO 1461 and paint data sheets.

Coastal Dubai puts external steelwork in C5-M territory under ISO 12944. The minimum is hot dip galvanising, often 85 microns, with a paint topcoat for colour matching. Inland industrial plots can usually drop to C4. Grade 316 stainless is the default within about 1 km of the water, with 304 used inland.

Quality control, ITP and submittals

A steel job should run to an inspection and test plan that the fabricator and the contractor sign off before cutting starts. The ITP covers material verification, dimensional checks, weld visual and NDT, dry film thickness for paint, torque records for bolted connections and final release.

Submittals at handover usually include shop drawings, weld maps, material certificates, WPS and welder certificates, NDT reports, paint specifications, galvanising certificates, as built drawings and the maintenance file. This is the paperwork a facility team will ask for years later, so it is worth checking at the start rather than at the end.

How to choose a steel fabrication company in Dubai

Choose on documentation, shop capacity and lead time, not on the lowest rate per tonne. A cheap rate that hides the galvanising, the NDT or the crane often costs more by handover.

  • Ask for WPS, welder certificates and recent steel fabrication projects in Dubai industrial zones
  • Check whether cutting, welding, drilling and lathe work are in house or subcontracted
  • Insist on an itemised quotation that separates material, fabrication, finish, transport, erection and inspection
  • Confirm quoted lead times and whether galvanising is done in house or sent out
  • Ask who signs the ITP and attends third party inspection
  • Request two or three contractor references from the same zone

A complete enquiry gets a faster answer. Send GA drawings, a bill of quantities or a marked up sketch with tonnages to request a steel fabrication quote, and ask for the rate split into fabrication only and erection only so you can compare like for like.

Frequently asked questions

How much does steel fabrication cost in Dubai per tonne in 2026?

Shop fabrication of mild steel runs about AED 2,600 to 3,400 per tonne. Add galvanising and the figure moves to AED 3,400 to 4,300 per tonne. Fabrication and erection together land between AED 4,800 and 6,200 per tonne for typical warehouse steelwork, with mezzanine decking at AED 320 to 520 per sq m.

How long does structural steel fabrication take in Dubai?

Allow two to three weeks for shop drawings and approvals, then three to five weeks in the workshop for 30 to 50 tonnes, depending on section availability and galvanising. A single mezzanine or staircase package is usually ready in 10 to 15 working days. Site erection of 40 tonnes normally takes three to five days with one crane.

Do I need a permit to erect structural steel in Dubai?

Yes. Permits come from Dubai Municipality or the relevant free zone authority, with Dubai Civil Defence clearance where the steel forms part of a building structure or an escape route. Transport of over dimensional members needs RTA permits, and night lifts or road closures need separate approval.

How do you protect steel from Dubai humidity and salt air?

External steel near the coast is hot dip galvanised to ISO 1461 and painted to a C5-M system under ISO 12944. Grade 316 stainless is standard within about 1 km of the water, and inland industrial areas can use galvanising with a C4 paint system. Any site cut or weld should be repaired with zinc rich primer.

What documents should a Dubai fabricator hand over at completion?

Expect shop drawings, a weld map, EN 10204 3.1 mill certificates, WPS and welder qualifications, NDT reports, torque records, paint dry film thickness readings, galvanising certificates and as built drawings. A third party inspection release note is standard on structural packages.
