Steel platform fabrication in the UAE: industrial access platforms, walkways and stair towers

Industrial steel platform fabrication in the UAE covers plant access platforms, maintenance walkways, loading decks and stair towers built to carry foot traffic, tools and light maintenance loads. This guide sets out what a fabricator needs before quoting, how the work is priced in AED, and the timeline from shop drawing to handover.

What counts as an industrial steel platform in the UAE

An industrial platform is a steel structure that gives safe standing access to equipment, tanks, pipework or a raised level, and it is built as a permanent or semi-permanent structure rather than a scaffold. In UAE plants the common types are access platforms around tanks and pumps, maintenance walkways along pipe racks and conveyors, loading and unloading platforms at warehouse doors, stair towers up to about 12 m high, and equipment access decks over chillers, generators and MCC rooms. If the platform sits inside a new industrial building, the shed frame is usually part of the same package, and warehouse steel structures in Dubai covers that scope.

Engineering inputs the fabricator needs before quoting

Loads, geometry and base conditions decide the section sizes, so a sketch alone is not enough to quote accurately. The minimum set is:

  • Design live load, typically 5 kN/m² for access walkways and 7.5 kN/m² where tools or pallets are stored
  • Point load allowance on any single member, usually 1.5 kN to 2 kN
  • Handrail load of 0.75 kN/m applied at the top rail
  • Span between supports, maximum unbraced length, and clear height under the platform
  • Connection details, and whether the platform ties into an existing structure or stands on its own base plates
  • Base conditions: slab thickness and chemical anchors, or pad footings

A walkway 1.2 m wide needs a lighter section than a platform spanning 6 m between posts, even when both cover 40 m².

Fabrication scope and finishing

Four decisions drive the price: shop fabrication, connection type, flooring and finish. Bolted connections suit platforms inside operating plants because they need less hot work on site, while welded frames are stiffer and cheaper in the shop but need a hot work permit and a welder qualified to ISO 9606.

FlooringTypical useSupply and fix
Hot-dip galvanized gratingOutdoor walkways, wet areas, decks needing drainageAED 190 to 260 per m²
Checker plate, 4 mm to 6 mmSolid working decks and indoor plant roomsAED 150 to 220 per m²

Handrails sit at 1.1 m with a mid rail and a 100 mm toe board on every open edge and stair. Outdoor steelwork is normally hot-dip galvanized to BS EN ISO 1461, while indoor items such as shelving and partitions usually take a powder coat finish.

Compliance in the UAE

Platforms are designed to a Eurocode 3 or BS 5950 basis of design, and that document is issued with the shop drawings. A permanent structure needs approval from the authority with jurisdiction, which is Dubai Municipality, DDA or Trakhees depending on the site, and Dubai Civil Defence reviews egress routes and the fire rating of steelwork supporting a protected escape. Material is traced with EN 10204 3.1 mill certificates and welders hold ISO 9606 qualification. For work inside a live plant, our steel fabrication in Dubai guide covers the permit sequence.

Cost: a 40 m² galvanized access walkway

A 40 m² walkway, 1.2 m wide and 33 m long, with handrails on both sides and posts at 3 m centres, currently lands around AED 58,000 fabricated and installed in Dubai, or about AED 1,450 per square metre.

Fabricated steelwork on its own trades between AED 4,500 and AED 7,500 per tonne across the UAE, and our steel fabrication cost in the UAE article breaks that band down by tonnage and finish. A 15 m² platform in Sharjah often works out nearer AED 1,900 per square metre, because survey, mobilisation and crane time spread over half the area.

Lead times and site logistics

Most platform packages run 3 to 5 weeks from approved shop drawings, and hot-dip galvanizing adds 5 to 7 working days. A typical sequence:

  1. Site survey and measurement, with base and tie-in points marked
  2. Shop drawings and load calculations issued for approval
  3. Material procurement against EN 10204 3.1 certificates
  4. Shop fabrication, welding and trial assembly
  5. Galvanizing and delivery to site
  6. Erection, often inside a shutdown window or at night to protect production hours
  7. Handover with as-built drawings and inspection records

At Jebel Ali, Mussafah or Hamriyah free zone sites the crane and hot work permits are usually raised by the plant, so booking the lift a week ahead keeps the shutdown on programme.

How to choose a platform fabricator

Ask four questions before you compare prices. Does the fabricator have its own workshop, or will the steel be subbed out? Will it issue as-built drawings that match what was bolted on site? Are the load calculations signed by an engineer who can defend them to the authority? Does it have its own erection crew, because a fabricator that sends a truck and a phone number leaves the site risk with you.

Frequently asked questions

How much does steel platform fabrication cost in the UAE?

A 40 m² galvanized access walkway with handrails runs about AED 58,000 fabricated and installed. Smaller 10 to 15 m² platforms land between AED 25,000 and AED 35,000 because mobilisation is spread over less area. Fabricated steelwork alone sits in the AED 4,500 to 7,500 per tonne band, with flooring, handrails and erection priced on top.

Do I need a permit for a steel platform in Dubai?

A permanent platform needs approval from Dubai Municipality, DDA or Trakhees depending on the site, and Dubai Civil Defence reviews egress where the platform forms part of an escape route. Temporary platforms inside an operating plant normally only need the plant work permit and a signed basis of design.

What live load should an industrial access platform be designed for?

Access walkways are usually designed for 5 kN/m², and decks carrying tools, spares or pallets go to 7.5 kN/m². Handrails are checked for 0.75 kN/m applied at the top rail. The figure should be printed on the drawing so the client and the authority review the same number.

How long does steel platform fabrication take?

Allow 3 to 5 weeks from approved shop drawings, plus 5 to 7 working days for hot-dip galvanizing. Erection of a 40 m² walkway is usually 2 to 3 days. If the work must fit a shutdown window, release the drawings 8 weeks ahead.

Is grating or checker plate better for a platform floor?

Grating drains water and dust, keeps the deck light and suits outdoor and wet plant areas. Checker plate gives a solid surface for indoor plant rooms and benches and costs slightly less. Expect AED 190 to 260 per m² for grating supplied and fixed, against AED 150 to 220 for checker plate.

Does APEX STEEL WORKS L.L.C work outside Dubai?

Yes. We fabricate and install across the United Arab Emirates, including Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah and Umm Al Quwain. Free zone sites such as Jebel Ali, Hamriyah and Mussafah add permit time, not capability.
