Steel staircase fabrication UAE: industrial guide
Industrial steel staircases in the UAE come down to five configurations, and the price is set by the spec sheet rather than by the number of steps. Here is what a UAE fabrication shop actually builds, what drives the cost per kg, and what a 3.2 m warehouse egress flight costs in dirhams.

Which industrial steel staircases a UAE shop actually builds
Almost all industrial and commercial access work falls into five shapes. The shape is chosen by available footprint, the clear width the authority requires, and where the top of the flight lands.
Straight flight
One run, no change of direction. Used for roof access, plant mezzanines and service risers where 3 m or more of clear horizontal run is available. Cheapest per kg because there is no landing to build.
Dog leg with a mid landing
The warehouse egress default. The flight rises to a half height landing, turns 180 degrees and continues. Smaller footprint than a straight flight, and it breaks a fall into two. Most industrial staircases we fabricate in Dubai and Sharjah are this shape.
Wide egress flights
Where the staircase is on the means of escape, clear width drives everything. Warehouse and factory flights usually run 1.1 m to 1.5 m clear between handrails, with a mid handrail added past 1.5 m. Heavier treads and deeper stringers follow, and so does the price.
Catwalks and access platforms with stairs
Pipe racks, chiller platforms, tank farms and conveyor gantries. The staircase is normally one line inside a larger platform package, and it pays to have both fabricated by the same shop so the landing connection lines up on site. That wider scope is covered in our article on structural steel works in Dubai.
Spiral and steep access stairs
Tight plant rooms, rooftop units and telecom shelters. A spiral saves footprint but costs more per kg and is slower to climb, so keep it on service access and off egress routes.
The spec sheet that decides your price
Two staircases with the same rise can differ by 40 percent in price. The difference sits entirely in the specification, so settle this part before you ask anyone to quote.
Stringer section and thickness
For a 3 m rise, expect 200 to 250 mm channel or 200x100 RHS in 6 to 8 mm wall. Deeper sections resist deflection on wide flights but add weight, and weight is what you buy.
Tread type
Chequered plate is standard indoors. Serrated grating, usually 30x5, is better outdoors, in wet areas and anywhere that gets washed down, because it drains and grips. Grating is lighter but dearer per kg, and it changes the stringer connection detail.
Handrail, mid rail and toe plate
Industrial standard is a top rail at 1.1 m, a mid rail at 550 mm and a 100 mm toe plate on the open side. Budget AED 380 to AED 650 per running metre of handrail, fabricated and galvanised.
Bolted or welded connections
Welded connections are stiffer and cheaper to make. Bolted connections with M16 hot dip galvanised bolts suit staircases that have to be craned into a shaft, dismantled for a shutdown, or shipped to a remote site. Bolting adds 4 to 8 percent to fabrication.
| Spec item | Typical industrial spec | Effect on price |
|---|---|---|
| Stringer | 250 mm channel, 8 mm web | Heavier sections add AED 1 to 2 per kg |
| Tread | 5 mm chequered plate | Grating instead adds AED 4 to 7 per kg |
| Handrail | 1.1 m high, 42.4 mm pipe, mid rail, toe plate | AED 380 to 650 per running metre |
| Connections | Welded, or bolted with M16 HDG | Bolted adds 4 to 8 percent |
| Finish | Hot dip galvanised to ISO 1461 | AED 2.00 to 2.80 per kg |
Finishes and what they cost in the UAE
Primer only
A zinc phosphate primer is the minimum and adds around AED 0.60 to AED 1.00 per kg. It is fine for a dry, air conditioned plant room in Dubai. It will not last a year outdoors here.
Hot dip galvanising
The default for anything outside, anything near a loading dock and anything washed down. Hot dip galvanising to ISO 1461 gives a 70 micron plus zinc coating and a 20 year plus maintenance-free life inland. Budget AED 2.00 to AED 2.80 per kg. Galvanisers apply a minimum charge, so on a small flight that minimum can dominate the line.
C5-M coastal specification
Within roughly 1 km of the coast, or in heavy industrial air, galvanising alone will show white rust. The answer is a duplex system: hot dip galvanise, then primer, epoxy intermediate and polyurethane topcoat for 240 to 320 microns of total dry film thickness. This is the correct specification around Jebel Ali port, Mussafah industrial area and the coastal plants. It adds AED 4.00 to AED 6.50 per kg, and it is the first thing missing from a suspiciously cheap quote.

Worked example: 3.2 m warehouse egress staircase in Dubai
A recent job: 3.2 m floor to floor, dog leg with a mid landing, 1.1 m clear width, handrails on both sides, hot dip galvanised, delivered and installed. Fabricated weight off the shop drawings was 1,400 kg.
| Line | Basis | AED |
|---|---|---|
| Steel material | 1,400 kg at AED 4.20 per kg | 5,880 |
| Fabrication | 1,400 kg at AED 3.50 per kg | 4,900 |
| Hot dip galvanising | 1,400 kg at AED 2.20 per kg | 3,080 |
| Delivery to site, Dubai | one trailer | 450 |
| Drawings, site survey, mill certs, submission pack | lump sum | 1,200 |
| Fabricated and delivered | 15,510 | |
| Installation, three man crew, one day | 2,600 | |
| Delivered and installed, excluding VAT | 18,110 |
That works out at AED 11.08 per kg fabricated and delivered, or AED 12.94 per kg installed, and roughly AED 9,050 per flight once the shared landing is taken out. Market wide, fabricated industrial staircases in the UAE land between AED 9 and AED 14 per kg depending on finish, and AED 12 to AED 18 per kg delivered and installed.
Material is AED 4.20 of that per kg figure, so always compare tonnage and fabrication separately. Our note on structural steel price per ton in the UAE splits mill prices from fabricated prices.

Approvals, documentation and lead time
Dubai Municipality and DMT or DAD submissions
On a commercial or industrial building the staircase sits inside the structural and life safety package submitted by the consultant. In Dubai that means Dubai Municipality. On Abu Dhabi projects it goes through DMT or DAD. We supply shop drawings, section properties, connection details and EN 10204 3.1 mill certificates so the pack moves without a second round.
Civil Defence egress requirements
Civil Defence reviews the staircase as part of the means of escape: clear width, handrail height, tread and riser geometry, landing size, and fire protection of the enclosing construction. Change the riser after approval and the submission starts again.
Mill certificates
Every tonne of section, plate and pipe should arrive with an EN 10204 3.1 certificate traceable to the heat number. Consultants ask for it routinely, and it is the quickest way to tell whether a shop buys from a mill or from a scrap yard.
Shop drawings and site survey
We survey before we draw. Landing levels, slab edges, obstructions and final connection positions all get recorded, because the most expensive word on any steel job is remake.
Lead time
Typical lead time for an industrial staircase is 2 to 4 weeks from approved shop drawings. Galvanising adds 3 to 5 working days and a C5-M duplex coating adds 5 to 8. The normal sequence runs:
- Site survey and dimensional report, 1 to 2 days.
- Shop drawings issued for approval, 3 to 5 days.
- Material procurement with 3.1 mill certificates, 3 to 7 days.
- Fabrication, cutting, welding and trial assembly, 5 to 10 days.
- Surface preparation and hot dip galvanising, 4 to 6 days.
- Delivery, installation and bolt torque check, 1 to 2 days.
- Handover pack with certificates, drawings and inspection reports.
Once the specification is fixed, the next decision is the supplier. Our guide on how to choose a steel fabrication company in the UAE sets out what to check before you release a purchase order.

Frequently asked questions
How much does steel staircase fabrication cost in the UAE?
Fabricated industrial staircases generally run AED 9 to AED 14 per kg, and AED 12 to AED 18 per kg once galvanising, delivery and installation are included. A 3.2 m galvanised warehouse egress flight with a mid landing and handrails on both sides works out around AED 15,500 fabricated and delivered, or AED 18,100 installed, excluding VAT. Send us your rise, clear width and finish and you can request a steel staircase fabrication quote with a line by line figure.
Do I need Civil Defence approval for a warehouse egress staircase?
Yes, wherever the staircase forms part of the means of escape. Civil Defence checks clear width, handrail height, tread and riser geometry, landing dimensions and the fire protection of the enclosing structure. The same staircase also forms part of the Dubai Municipality or DMT-DAD structural submission, so drawings and mill certificates need to be ready before fabrication starts.
What is the lead time for industrial steel staircase fabrication in Dubai?
Plan on 2 to 4 weeks from approved shop drawings. Fabrication takes 5 to 10 working days, hot dip galvanising adds 3 to 5, and a full C5-M duplex coating adds 5 to 8. Late drawing approval is the usual reason a job runs past four weeks.
Should I use chequered plate or grating for stair treads?
Grating for anything outdoors, wet, oily or washed down, because it drains and grips. Chequered plate for indoor plant rooms and dry warehouse floors, where it costs less per kg and is easier to keep clean. Switching to grating adds roughly AED 4 to AED 7 per kg to the fabricated price.
Can you fabricate a stainless steel staircase for a food or pharma plant?
Yes. Wash down areas normally call for grade 316L with fully welded and pickled joints, a 2B finish and no open box sections where water can sit. Stainless fabrication costs roughly 2.5 to 4 times the equivalent carbon steel weight, so the layout is usually optimised before the material is fixed.
