Structural steel fabricators Abu Dhabi: 2026 buyer guide

A structural steel fabricator in Abu Dhabi cuts, drills, fits, welds, blasts, paints and marks the steel, then delivers it to site with the paperwork attached. If your project needs a pipe rack, mezzanine, truss, plant support or equipment skid, a steel trader cannot supply it and an erection crew cannot make it.

What a structural steel fabricator actually delivers

A fabricator owns the conversion from raw section to bolted member. You send drawings and get back marked, drilled, welded and coated steel that fits on site the first time. A trader sells you sections. An erection-only contractor bolts up steel that someone else made. Only the fabricator owns your tolerances, your welding procedure and your traceability pack.

On an Abu Dhabi industrial package, ask for the tonnage breakdown before the price. Normal practice is a per ton rate with separate lines for blasting, priming, topcoat, galvanising and any NDT. A quote that arrives as one lump sum usually hides a coating shortcut. You can see the scope we run on our structural steel fabrication services page.

Workshop capability checklist

The workshop decides whether the price holds. Walk the shop or ask for the equipment list, welder register and coating records before you place a purchase order.

  • Welding quality system to ISO 3834-2, with welder qualification records to ISO 9606-1 or AWS D1.1 in the positions actually used on your job
  • Written WPS and PQRs that match the steel grades and plate thicknesses on your drawings
  • CNC plasma or oxy-fuel cutting, a beam drill line and band saws for square, repeatable holes
  • Press brake capacity for plate up to 20 to 25 mm if the job has base plates and gussets
  • Overhead lifting for members from 5 t to 50 t, plus yard space to lay out and trial assemble a frame before delivery
  • In-house blasting to Sa 2.5 and paint applied to a measured dry film thickness, not brushed over mill scale
  • A galvanising route that returns documented coating thickness, typically 85 microns for structural sections

A five minute look at the welder qualification register tells you more than any brochure. On the type of work we hand over, clients notice the detailing more than the price.

Fabrication in Musaffah, KEZAD and KIZAD, and the site fabrication trade off

Most Abu Dhabi industrial steelwork is fabricated in a steel fabrication workshop Musaffah based and delivered into KEZAD, KIZAD, ICAD and Mussafah Industrial. Shop fabrication wins on tolerance, coating quality and cost. Site fabrication is only worth it when a member physically cannot travel.

Transport sets the practical limit. A 30 m truss at 3.5 m wide needs a wide load permit and escort, and splitting it into two bolted halves is often cheaper than moving it whole. Distances matter too. Musaffah to KEZAD is roughly 60 km of haulage, Musaffah to a Jebel Ali site is closer to 130 km, and each load carries roughly AED 300 to 900 in transport and permit cost. A Dubai or Sharjah site adds the same order of magnitude again.

Site welding is possible but it comes with hot work permits, a fire watch, gas clearance and coating repair on every welded joint. Use it for connections and closure pieces, not for the bulk of the frame.

The Abu Dhabi approval and QA path

Industrial steelwork in Abu Dhabi moves through the DMT and municipal permit route, with a third party inspection agency signing off each hold point. Get the document pack right at the start or the steel sits in the yard.

  1. Confirm the permit route. Structure permits run through the Department of Municipalities and Transport and the relevant municipality, with Civil Defence review where the steel is fire rated or forms part of a protected structure.
  2. Issue approved shop drawings. IFC drawings and the structural engineer stamped calculations drive the fabrication package.
  3. Approve the ITP. The inspection and test plan lists hold points, witness points and acceptance criteria for dimensions, welds and coatings.
  4. Submit WPS, PQR and welder certificates, plus material test certificates to EN 10204 3.1, before cutting starts.
  5. Run third party inspection. Ultrasonic or magnetic particle testing on full penetration welds, dimensional checks and dry film thickness readings per the ITP.
  6. Hand over the certificate pack on delivery. Galvanising certificate, paint records, NDT reports, bolt torque records where relevant and as built mark drawings.

If a fabricator cannot produce a WPS and PQR for your steel grade and thickness within two working days, that is a warning sign, not a paperwork delay.

2026 rate bands, lead times and how to shortlist three fabricators

In 2026, standard structural steel fabrication cost Abu Dhabi sits around AED 4,200 to 6,800 per ton for fabrication only, with galvanising at AED 900 to 1,400 per ton on top. Supply and erect packages typically land at AED 6,500 to 9,800 per ton installed.

A worked example for a KEZAD plant platform and pipe rack of 18 tons: 18 t at AED 5,400 gives AED 97,200 for fabrication, galvanising at 18 t and AED 1,150 gives AED 20,700, so the delivered galvanised steel is about AED 117,900 before erection. Blasting and a three coat paint system alone runs about AED 450 to 900 per ton. Stainless steel and GI welding are priced separately and usually higher than carbon steel.

"The price was fair for the steel work." Pushpjeet Singh, 5/5

Lead times, counted from approved shop drawings: bolted frames and platforms 4 to 6 weeks, galvanised work plus 7 to 10 days, trusses and heavy plate 8 to 12 weeks. Rush programmes are possible but they cost more, and welding quality is the first thing that suffers when a shop overpromises.

Shortlist three fabricators on the same scope, the same tonnage and the same coating spec:

  1. Send one drawing set with a coating schedule and ask for an itemised tonnage breakdown.
  2. Compare welding standard, material certificates and galvanising supplier line by line, not on total price alone.
  3. Ask each one to name the project manager and confirm the delivery week in writing.
  4. Check payment terms, retention and whether mobilisation is charged separately.

Then send your drawings through to request a structural steel fabrication quote. More background on tolerances, coatings and erection sequencing sits in our steel fabrication and erection guides.

Frequently asked questions

How much does structural steel fabrication cost in Abu Dhabi?

In 2026, fabrication only for standard structural steel runs about AED 4,200 to 6,800 per ton. Add AED 900 to 1,400 per ton for galvanising, or allow AED 6,500 to 9,800 per ton for a supply and erect package. Stainless steel, GI welding and heavy plate work price higher.

Do I need an ISO 3834 certified fabricator in the UAE?

Many Abu Dhabi industrial and government prequalifications ask for ISO 3834-2, and some specifications call for EN 1090-2 execution class with AWS D1.1 welding. Ask for the certificate scope and the welder qualification register, because a certificate alone does not prove the shop can weld your thickness in the required position.

How long does steel fabrication take in Abu Dhabi?

Bolted frames and platforms take 4 to 6 weeks from approved shop drawings, trusses and heavy plate take 8 to 12 weeks, and galvanising adds 7 to 10 days. Permit approvals run in parallel with fabrication, so start drawings early to avoid holding up delivery to KEZAD or KIZAD.

Can steel be fabricated on site instead of in the workshop?

Yes, but only where a member cannot be transported, such as an oversized truss or a closure piece. Site welding needs hot work permits, a fire watch and coating repair at every joint. Workshop fabrication in Musaffah gives better tolerance control and a documented coating system.

What documents should come with a structural steel delivery?

The pack should include material test certificates to EN 10204 3.1, WPS and PQRs, welder qualification records, ITP sign offs, NDT reports, paint dry film thickness records, the galvanising certificate and as built mark drawings. Without these, a third party inspector can reject the load on site.
